Your Rights at School

Federal law (Title IX) protects you. PGCPS must follow these rules.

Title IX

  • Your school CANNOT push you out, transfer you, or treat you differently because you are pregnant or a parent.
  • Absences for prenatal visits, labor, recovery, and your baby's doctor visits MUST be excused.
  • You have the right to make up missed work and stay on track to graduate.
  • Your school must give you a private, clean space (not a bathroom) to pump breast milk.
  • Homebound instruction is available if your doctor recommends it.

Moving around or staying with friends?

If you don't have a steady place to sleep — even staying with a friend, in a motel, or moving between relatives — you have extra rights under the McKinney-Vento Act.

  • 1.You can stay at your school of origin even if you move out of zone.
  • 2.The county must provide transportation to that school — for free.
  • 3.Immediate enrollment — no proof of address, immunization records, or birth certificate required up front.

Confidential. No one at school has to know.
